Autumn Joy Sedum will spread up to 3 feet wide, and makes a nice evergreen mat. Autumn Joy sedum is also easy to divide if you want a spreading ground cover for a sunny spot. Combine Autumn Joy sedum with ornamental grasses and rudebeckia for a gorgeous fall display. Extend the season by planting Autumn Joy over spring blooming bulbs like daffodils, or near irises. I like this line because you get a second chance if you forget to water and the flowers turn brown, or still get flowers if pruned back too hard. Snowberry is often planted after Himalayan blackberry removal because it has a strong root system and is one of the few plants that can compete with Himalayan blackberry. This cold hardy hibiscus sports a heavenly pink flower with a dark center that glows in sunlight. The flowers drop after bloom so deadheading isn't necessary. Hibiscus leaves have a unique shape and yellow fall color. Plant can grow in full sun to part shade, and thrive in the heat of late summer. Plant at the back of the flower border; these can grow 8-12'. Aphrodite Hibiscus make a great backdrop for lime leaf colored spirea like Gold Flame, Gold Mound, or Little Princess, the hibiscus will start blooming as the spirea flowers fade. They can be pruned hard in the spring to keep them smaller. Hibiscus tolerate a wide range of soils and are deer resistant. The redbuds have bright pink flowers that coat the branches in spring after all the other spring trees are done blooming. Adorable heart shaped leaves with colors like lime green or burgundy purple that hold on through the fall. When they finally drop, the colors are breathtaking with bright yellow, oranges and burgundy. The redbud ranges in size from very small, 5-6' to 25-30'; there's the right sized one for any garden. My favorite are the Flame thrower with green and maroon leaves and the Ruby Falls with the weeping purple leaves, Heart of Gold is nice for the lime green leaves in a dark corner. Redbuds like full sun or partial shade, so are a good alternative to Japanese maples. The Meidiland line of shrub roses was bred for disease resistance and extensive reblooming. The Crimson Meidiland spreads out along the ground 4' wide, smothering the weeds, it can also be planted along a hillside for erosion control. A quick trim in late winter will keep these beauties full and looking their best. Underplant these roses with Walker's Low catmint for a vibrant color combination all summer. These early blooming deep purple lavender are compact plants with a long 12\" stem, perfect for bouquets and lavender wands. Lavendula angustifolia are easy to maintain as a compact lavender by shearing back 2/3 of the plant in fall; they don't get as woody as French lavender. SuperBlue lavender is also edible, and can be used in making teas, cookies, jams, and other yummy treats. SuperBlue, like all lavender need full sun and good drainage to thrive.
