This cold hardy hibiscus sports a heavenly pink flower with a dark center that glows in sunlight. The flowers drop after bloom so deadheading isn't necessary. Hibiscus leaves have a unique shape and yellow fall color. Plant can grow in full sun to part shade, and thrive in the heat of late summer. Plant at the back of the flower border; these can grow 8-12'. Aphrodite Hibiscus make a great backdrop for lime leaf colored spirea like Gold Flame, Gold Mound, or Little Princess, the hibiscus will start blooming as the spirea flowers fade. They can be pruned hard in the spring to keep them smaller. Hibiscus tolerate a wide range of soils and are deer resistant. The redbuds have bright pink flowers that coat the branches in spring after all the other spring trees are done blooming. Adorable heart shaped leaves with colors like lime green or burgundy purple that hold on through the fall. When they finally drop, the colors are breathtaking with bright yellow, oranges and burgundy. The redbud ranges in size from very small, 5-6' to 25-30'; there's the right sized one for any garden. My favorite are the Flame thrower with green and maroon leaves and the Ruby Falls with the weeping purple leaves, Heart of Gold is nice for the lime green leaves in a dark corner. Redbuds like full sun or partial shade, so are a good alternative to Japanese maples. Goldfinger Potentilla is a sun lover that thrives in this heat! The sunny yellow bloomer is perfect for a hot dry place, like a sunny hillside or a xeriscape rock garden. Potentilla is one of the longest blooming shrubs; it blooms all summer. Goldfinger Potentilla grows 3 feet tall by 4 feet wide, it is the perfect height in front of tall grasses or evergreens. The leaves emerge orange and turn yellow and stay lime green through the summer. The white umbel shaped flowers are just emerging, and after keeping the bees happy they will turn to red berries that persist into winter. The fall color is a vibrant yellow. Oh Canada Viburnum looked beautiful all season last year. Its large size 6' by 6'size makes it a great backdrop to perennials and smaller shrubs, and makes a nice contrast to other dark green foliage plants. Oh Canada Viburnum does well in sun and part sun, and won't burn like other light foliage in full sun. Supplies are limited on the Oh Canada Viburnum this week, but it's too amazing to not share. The Purple Leaf Sand Cherry is a true low maintenance shrub. It isn't picky about soil or moisture, so long as it isn't planted in boggy soil. The purple leaves make a nice accent shrub for a garden that doesn't have enough contrast in foliage colors, and looks particularly vibrant planted with some Spirea or ornamental grasses at its base. Unlike some purple shrubs that turn green in summer heat Purple Leaf Sand Cherry stays purple, and has red fall color. Perfect for the florist out there looking for some added interest to their bouquets🌹. Purple Leaf Sand Cherry can be used as a deciduous hedge or limbed up for a small tree as well. It grows 6'-10' tall and 5'-6' wide. This is an extremely low maintenance shrub, which responds well to pruning, but does not need it.
